How to use Jetpack for uptime or downtime monitoring for WordPress websites

Search engines like Google rank websites based on what they find when crawling websites like yours. If your site is down, search engines will not find any content or pages to index and rank. You’ll want your website to be back up and running before a search engine decides that it’s no longer an active presence online so uptime or downtime monitoring is not an option to ignore.

Uptime or downtime monitoring with continuous pings to your site

Jetpack monitors your website’s uptime by checking the connection of your site’s homepage every five minutes. Jetpack will mark your website as “down” if it notices redirects, slow response times, or no response at all.

Once your website is tentatively marked “down,” Jetpack employs servers in geographically different locations to verify that the problem is not isolated to its network or primary data center location.

If all three checks fail, Jetpack marks the site as “down” and notifies you. Should your website ever fail any of these checks, you’ll receive a push notification on WordPress.com and the application, if you have it installed.

Your site may be loading slowly. If your site can’t be loaded in less than 20 seconds, Jetpack systems will consider this as inaccessible. This may happen if you’re on shared hosting, where your bandwidth is shared with many other websites, or if you have a lot of resources loading on your home page; this will slow your site down.

Note that for downtime monitoring in some cases your site may be slow for a few minutes only. Its loading speed then comes back to normal after your hosting provider has taken measures to isolate other sites on your server that may have used too many resources and slowed everyone else’s site down for a few minutes.

When the monitoring downtime setting is activated, downtime notification emails will be sent to the user who activated it. If you have additional admin users connected to their WordPress.com accounts, they can also enable these email notifications for themselves via Jetpack → Settings → Security.

If you’d like to add something to your email filters to make sure these notification emails never get sent to spam, they’ll all be coming from no-reply@jetpack.com, and have one of the following subject lines:

[Jetpack Monitor] jetpack.com is not loading!
[Jetpack Monitor] jetpack.com is still offline.
[Jetpack Monitor] jetpack.com is back up!

The first message will be sent when we first detect your site being down. The second will arrive if it’s still down after about an hour, and the final message will come when it looks like your site is back up again!
